Information

Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact but wildlife-rich park in Kenya’s Rift Valley, famous for its flamingo-filled lake and rhino conservation. Despite its relatively small size (about 188 km²), it’s one of the country’s most visited parks due to easy access from Nairobi and spectacular scenery.

Key Highlights

  1. Flamingos and Birdlife:
The park’s shallow alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos (mainly lesser and greater flamingos) during the wet season, creating a spectacular pink shoreline. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here.

  2. Rhinos:
Lake Nakuru is a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, making it one of Kenya’s top rhino conservation sites.

  3. Wildlife Diversity:
Beyond rhinos, you’ll find lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, baboons, and numerous antelope species.

  4. Scenic Landscapes:
The park features rolling hills, the Rift Valley escarpment, and the lake itself, providing stunning photographic backdrops.

  5. Accommodations and Activities:
Game drives are the primary activity, but visitors can also enjoy picnic sites, birdwatching, and guided nature walks.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: November–April for flamingos, although their presence varies depending on rainfall and water conditions.

  • Safari Essentials: Binoculars for birdwatching, camera, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes.

  • Health Precautions: Malaria prophylaxis recommended.
